Moving club – Did you know?…

Even in children’s football if a player is already signed to a club there is an FA process called ‘7-day Approach’ that may have to be adhered to. If both clubs’ teams play in different leagues that have no logistical conflict then the process will not be applicable and indeed the child may play for both teams, but if the clubs’ teams play in the same league or on the same day, the process must be followed because the player is effectively choosing to move.

Each season the FA deems a player’s sign on to expire on the 31st May. After this date the player becomes a ‘free agent’. So if you’re joining us prior to the 31st May, please let us know if you are signed on to another club so we can prepare to apply the process. It simply involves us giving written notice to the other club that we have approached you. Yes, you’ve approached us, but that is the way it’s termed (it’s a rule created to deal with how older youth and adult players may be scouted). We advise you give polite and courteous notice to the club you are leaving in order to hasten the process.

Note the process is also applicable to open recruitment sessions that take place before the sign on expiry date, i.e. if you’re signed to another team, you cannot take part in these until after 31st May. The host club is responsible for ensuring participants are free agents.
